The advantage of distributed acoustic sensing is that it can be used over long distances, up to 40km or more, and, crucially, only single-mode armored fiber optic cables are required.
Applications for distributed acoustic sensing include border security, gas and oil pipeline monitoring, fiber optic cable monitoring, submarine cable monitoring, belt conveyor monitoring, wind turbine monitoring, and other applications.
The following is a brief description of each.
Border security monitoring is the most commonly used application scenarios, through the fiber optic cable laid on top of the fence, or buried in the soil, used to monitor the protection of important areas from unauthorized intrusion, when someone trespasses into the area, vibration fiber optic cables are able to listen to the vibration, and to carry out early warning and alarm.
In previous years, the use of DVS is more, but because the DVS is demodulated by the amplitude value, can not be quantitative monitoring, so now DAS combined with DVS program is more, the effect is also better.
Monitoring of pipeline types is also a typical application of distributed fiber optic acoustic sensing. Currently many natural gas or oil pipelines in the laying of the pipeline will be put in advance of the fiber optic cable is also laid. This provides the conditions for monitoring with fiber optic cables without the possibility of secondary fiber optic cable laying.
The length of many natural gas and oil pipelines is in the range of 10km to 25km, which is costly to monitor by conventional means. The cost of armored fiber optic cable is low, and the distributed fiber optic cable monitoring technology can simultaneously monitor the pipeline for 25km or even longer distances, avoiding the pipeline from being damaged by excavators or other construction.
Belt press monitoring has become very popular in the last 2 years, and the distance of belt presses will usually be up to 10km. The running structure of the belt conveyor is made up of many pallet rails, and the failure of the pallet rails will cause the temperature to rise, and since the belt conveyor transports flammable and explosive substances such as coal, the rise in temperature can easily cause accidents.
So there is a need to have a feasible means of monitoring, the current market commonly used DTS temperature measurement + DAS fiber optic acoustic sensing way to monitor. Through the DAS sound acquisition, and vibration signals are analyzed, the location of possible failures for early warning and processing.
Wind turbines are also an emerging use scenario, and wind turbines are expensive. The fan blades of the wind turbines need to be monitored in real time to warn of failures and repair them in advance.
