What is a balanced photodetector?


Introduction

The balanced photodetector consists of two photodiodes and a differential amplifier. The optical signal is first split into two paths through an optical beam splitter and is fed into the two photodiodes. The two photodiodes operate in the same way, but the input light signal is in opposite phase. The differential signal is amplified by the amplifier and the working points of the two photodiodes are adjusted by the feedback loop so that their output signals are always equal, thus eliminating the unevenness and variability in light source intensity and photodiode performance, etc., and improving the sensitivity and anti-interference capability of the detector.
